Fred Potts, Age 25

Private, 24772, 8th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)

West Riding cap badge
West Riding Regiment Cap Badge.

Fred was the son of Edwin & Mary Potts of 8 Holly Hedge, Little Dawley this being their address according to the 1901 census at which point Fred was aged 9. The family consisted of 4 sons George, Fred, Harry and Harold as well as two daughters Patty and Maise so things must have been pretty crowded at Holly Hedge.

Whether the family had moved or just Fred is unknown but at the time Fred enlisted he gave his address as Todmorden, Yorkshire, hence the enlistment into the West Riding regiment.

Fred was badly wounded during 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) and although he was brought back to a Casualty clearing station just to the rear of the Ypres salient he died from his wounds on the 11th August 1917 and his body lies at the Dozinghem Military Cemetery in grave III.D.17
